I created Book Bits as a service for libraries that allowed patrons to scan QR Code that directed their Smart Phone web browser to a mobile site that contained a Book Summary, Reviews and Rating, Similar Books, and a Book Trailer (if one existed). The Mobile site could also be configured with the library's contact info, links to Twitter and Facebook, and a 'Homepage' that could include anything that the library wanted to enter into the WYSIWYG Editor.

The site also included an Admin Panel that let Librarians log in and check the usage stats. Admins could track hits per day for the past month, total hits per month for the last year, and Top 100 Books directly on the site or export the data to an excel spreadsheet.

Background: The NUCLC is a joint effort of the Pleasant Grove, American Fork, Lehi, and Eagle Mountain libraries to provide extended resources to our patrons across Northern Utah County. This is not a county library system.

Because it is not a county library system, the libraries do not have a unified ILS. Between the four library there are three different interfaces.

Goal: I was tasked with creating a search tool that allows patrons to search all four libraries simultaneously for an item.

Features:

  • Ajaxy interface to minimize page loads
  • Result from all four libraries with copy statuses
  • Images to quickly identify material type (Book, Audio-CD, Cassette Tape, Playaway, DVD)
  • Voice Search (Chrome only)

Technology: To accomplish this task I used the CodeIgniter Framework which is a small and quick PHP framwork. I also incorporated jQuery for most of the javascript and Ajax requests.
